Why we're building Kern

Every phone today is optimised for engagement. Infinite scrolling, autoplay, algorithmic feeds, notification badges designed to pull you back in. The entire industry is built on a single metric: time spent on screen. We're building the first phone optimised for the opposite.

The problem is the phone itself

Screen time apps rely on willpower. Dumb phones remove capability. Neither works. People who try digital detox tools end up disabling them within weeks. People who switch to basic phones end up carrying two devices: one for calls, one for everything else. The problem is not a lack of discipline. The problem is that modern phones are architected, from the hardware up, to keep you looking at them.

We started Kern because no phone on the market solved the problem we both had. The ones that existed either removed capability or relied on willpower. We wanted a phone that does everything, but changes how you pick it up. Friction where you need it. Defaults that help. Not a dumb phone. A deliberate one.

Full capability, different defaults

Kern runs every Android app. Banking, rideshare, work tools, messaging. All available. The difference is what's easy. Native apps like calls, messages, maps, music, camera, and email are instant, zero friction. Social media works through controlled wrappers: Instagram without the feed, YouTube without autoplay. The utility without the trap. The full Play Store catalogue is accessible via the Kern Store, behind deliberate friction.

A physical QWERTY keyboard means every navigation step is a deliberate choice. You can't mindlessly scroll with directional keys. An AI agent handles tasks through natural language. You say what you need, it executes via Android intents, and control returns to you. No app opening. No browsing. No rabbit holes.

Friction, not restriction

The phone can do everything. The difference is what's easy. If you want to do something, there's always a path. We don't believe in dead ends. We believe the competition is the iPhone. If this device ever makes someone reach for their old phone, it has failed.

The phone works for you. Not for an ad network. No Google Services by default. On-device AI processing. Cloud is opt-in. Your data syncs with standard protocols: CardDAV, CalDAV, IMAP. No vendor lock-in, no mandatory accounts, no forced cloud backup.

Pick up. Do the thing. Put down. That's the product.
